STEP 2: SPECIAL EDUCATION EVALUATION/TESTING
Evaluation is the second step in the special education process. The evaluation assists in determining the child's eligibility for special education services.

Evaluation is the second step in the special education process. The evaluation assists in determining the child's eligibility for special education services.
- Evaluations/testing will be scheduled to take place in the public school setting and/or at St. Agatha School.
- A classroom observation of your child will be made at St. Agatha by a representative from the public school.
- Teachers are frequently asked to fill our teacher observation forms. The Resource Center will coordinate any teacher forms that are sent to either the parent or St. Agatha School.
By law all evaluations are required to:
- Be racially and culturally nondiscriminatory.
- Be given in your child's native language or communication mode or form that gives accurate information.
- Be given to most accurately reflect your child's aptitude and academic achievement.
- Be given by trained personnel, and in accordance with instructions provided by the producer of the assessments.
- Be comprehensive enough to identify your child's special education needs and related service needs.
- Include a variety of assessments tools and strategies to gather pertinent information that directly assists in determining the educational needs of your child.
Evaluations must include:
- An educational assessment that incorporates a description of your child's progress and potential, and measurements of his or her attention skills, participation behaviors, communication skills, memory, and social relations with groups, peers, and adults.
- An assessment in all areas related to your child's suspected disability.
- A review of existing evaluation data, and observations by teachers and related service providers.
- It must include documentation on the use of any instructional support services provided to your child.
- The evaluation may also include health, psychological, and/or home assessments, by recommendation or by your request.
