Parent Advisory Councils for Special Education
Massachusetts State Law calls for the establishment of Parent Advisory Councils for Special Education. Each school district creates a parent advisory council that offers membership to all parents of students with disabilities and other interested parties. The membership is free of cost. Parent advisory council duties consist of:
- Advising the district on matters that pertain to the education and safety of students and disabilities
- Meeting regularly with school officials to participate in the planning, development and evaluation of school district's special education programs
- Establishing by-laws regarding officers and operational procedures
- The parent advisory council receives assistance from the district without charge, upon reasonable notice, and subject to availability of staff and resources
- The district shall conduct, in cooperation with the parent advisory council, at least one workshop annually within in the school district on the rights of students and their parents and guardians under state and federal special education laws
The Resource Center recommends that parents spend time becoming familiar with the resources of their city/town's PAC. If your city/town is not listed, please contact Mrs. McGinness. ([email protected])
